The Glock 19
Universally, the Insights instructor cadre carries and shoots Glock 19s. The main exception to this are instructors who are issued a different gun by their employers. From my perspective, I did not choose the Glock 19 because it is the “perfect” or best gun out there. I see it as the gun with the least problems given my tactics and skills.
- It is extremely reliable with all kinds of ammo
- It is reasonably accurate for defensive purposes
- It is reasonably ergonomic, but more importantly, it does not interfere with my grip and shooting platform
- It is easy to shoot
- It is fairly easy to conceal
- It is a simple and safe design
- It is reasonably priced
- It is easy to maintain
- Parts are cheap and easily replaced
For modifications, the only thing we recommend is replacing the sights.

If the grip fits you well enough. The only serious design flaw of the Glock is the “limp wristing” problem. (I believe Glock lost a major federal agency contract due to this issue.) Fire the gun at an odd angle to the grip hand/arm or poorly supported and it is more likely to not cycle properly than a most other guns. Another not very desirable trait is the pull the trigger to disassemble issue. That said it is generally not a problem and all the B to A scores in the other areas make it a best all around choice.
